riverboat casinos

Gambling on water

Riverboat casinos are gambling establishments built on boats, originally required by law to operate on navigable waterways in states that prohibited land-based casinos.

Many were paddlewheel-style vessels evoking nineteenth-century Mississippi River steamboats.

Some states required the boats to cruise during gambling hours; others allowed them to remain docked.

Today many riverboat casinos are permanently moored or built on barges that never move, making the "boat" distinction largely a legal fiction.
