ringing up

Making a call

Ringing up is recording a sale on a cash register, from the bell that older registers sounded when opened: She rang up my groceries.

The phrase extends to any accumulation of charges or achievements: He's been ringing up victories all season.

To ring someone up (British) is to telephone them.
