rifled barrels
Spinning bullet channels
Rifled barrels have spiral grooves cut into their interior, causing bullets to spin as they travel through.
This spin stabilizes the projectile in flight, dramatically improving accuracy and range compared to smooth-bore barrels.
The term rifled comes from the grooves themselves, called rifling.
Most modern firearms—handguns, rifles, and many shotguns—use rifled barrels.
