rent to own
Gradual acquisition method
Rent to own is an arrangement where payments go toward eventual ownership of a product or property.
With appliances and furniture, weekly or monthly rental payments accumulate toward a purchase price—often totaling far more than retail.
With real estate, a portion of rent applies toward a down payment or purchase: They signed a rent-to-own agreement on the house.
The hyphenated form functions as an adjective: a rent-to-own contract.
