religious tribunal
Ecclesiastical judicial body
A religious tribunal is a court that adjudicates matters according to religious law rather than civil authority.
The term most often refers to ecclesiastical courts of the Catholic Church, which handle annulments, clergy discipline, and canon law disputes, or to the historical tribunals of the Inquisition that prosecuted heresy: She sought an annulment through the diocesan religious tribunal.
Islamic sharia courts and Jewish rabbinical courts serve similar functions in their traditions.
