religious council
Clergy governing body
A religious council is a formal assembly of clergy or religious leaders convened to discuss doctrine, governance, or discipline within a faith tradition.
In Christianity, councils have defined core beliefs and resolved theological disputes: The Council of Nicaea established the Nicene Creed.
Other faiths have analogous bodies that issue rulings or set policy for their communities.
