rat tail
Long dangling lock
A rat tail is a thin, trailing strand—most often a narrow strip of hair left long at the nape of the neck while the rest is cut short, popular in the 1980s and now often considered tacky.
The term extends to anything resembling a rat's actual tail: a thin file tapered to a point, a trailing cord, or the stringy end of a whip.
He still had that rat tail from middle school.
