ransomware attack
Encrypted files, demands payment
A ransomware attack is a cyberattack in which malicious software encrypts a victim's files or locks their system, with attackers demanding payment—usually in cryptocurrency—for the decryption key.
Targets range from individuals to hospitals, corporations, and governments.
Paying the ransom doesn't guarantee data recovery, and many organizations refuse on principle: The city's computer systems were crippled for weeks after a ransomware attack.
