A pump fake is a deceptive motion in sports—especially basketball—where a player mimics the start of a shot or pass to draw a defender out of position, then doesn't follow through: He pump faked, got his man in the air, and drove to the basket.
The move extends figuratively to any feint designed to misdirect: The announcement was just a pump fake to distract from the real news.
