protolanguage

Reconstructed ancestral tongue

A protolanguage is a reconstructed or hypothetical ancestral language from which a group of related languages descended.

Linguists piece together Proto-Indo-European from patterns across Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and other daughter languages.

The term also describes the simplified, grammar-light communication of early human ancestors or young children before full language develops.
