pressing combs
Hot hair implements
Pressing combs are heated metal combs used to straighten tightly curled or textured hair.
The comb is heated on a stove or with electricity, then drawn through sections of hair to temporarily relax the curl pattern.
The technique was central to Black hair care for much of the twentieth century, before chemical relaxers and the natural hair movement offered alternatives: My grandmother heated her pressing comb on the stove every Sunday.
