power strokes
Combustion's driving phases
Power strokes are the phases in an engine cycle when combustion forces the piston down, generating the mechanical energy that drives the crankshaft.
In a four-stroke engine, only one of every four strokes produces power.
The term extends to any forceful, productive phase of a repetitive motion—the pull phase in rowing, the downward push in cycling: She focused on maximizing her power strokes during the sprint.
