political police
Regime's secret agents
Political police are security forces that monitor, suppress, and punish political dissent rather than ordinary crime.
They surveil citizens, infiltrate opposition groups, and enforce ideological conformity through intimidation, arrest, and sometimes assassination.
The Gestapo, KGB, and Stasi are notorious examples.
The political police maintained files on anyone who attended the protest.
