plutonium bombs

Fissile element ordnance

Plutonium bombs are nuclear weapons that use plutonium-239 as their fissile material.

The first nuclear device ever detonated (Trinity, 1945) and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki were plutonium bombs, using an implosion design to compress the plutonium core to critical mass.

Distinguished from uranium bombs, which use highly enriched uranium-235.
