plan C
Backup's own backup
A backup to the backup—a third option when both plan A and plan B have failed or become unavailable.
The letter can extend further (plan D, plan E) as contingencies multiply, though the humor of escalating letters often acknowledges that improvisation has replaced genuine planning: We're on plan C at this point, just making it up as we go.
