pitifulness

State of sorriness

Pitifulness is the quality of arousing or deserving pity—a state of being sad, inadequate, or worthy of compassion.

The word can describe genuine wretchedness: the pitifulness of refugees huddled in the rain.

More often it carries contempt for something pathetically insufficient: the pitifulness of his excuses, the sheer pitifulness of the attempt.
