pineapple plant
Crown-sprouting tropical perennial
A pineapple plant is the tropical plant (*Ananas comosus*) that produces pineapples.
It grows as a rosette of stiff, sword-shaped leaves with a single fruit emerging from the center on a thick stalk.
Unlike most fruit trees, each plant produces only one pineapple per growing cycle.
Pineapple plants are cultivated commercially in tropical regions and grown as ornamentals or novelties elsewhere: She started a pineapple plant from the crown of one she bought at the grocery store.
