pigment cell
Skin tone source
A pigment cell is a cell containing pigment—a substance that produces color.
In animals, these cells (also called chromatophores) determine skin, hair, and eye color.
Melanocytes, which produce melanin, are the most familiar type in humans.
Some animals like chameleons and octopuses have pigment cells that expand or contract to change color rapidly.
