piece rate
Per-unit compensation
Piece rate is a pay system where workers earn a fixed amount for each unit produced rather than an hourly wage: Garment workers were paid a piece rate of fifty cents per shirt.
The system incentivizes speed but can encourage cutting corners on quality.
Common in manufacturing, agriculture, and gig work where output is easily measured.
