piano forte

Eighty-eight keys

Piano forte is an older term for the piano, the keyboard instrument whose strings are struck by hammers.

The name comes from the instrument's ability to play both soft (piano) and loud (forte) depending on how firmly the keys are pressed—a major innovation over the harpsichord.

Now usually shortened to simply piano.
