penalty yards

Infraction's ground cost

Penalty yards are the distance a team loses or gains when the opposing team commits a foul in American football.

Officials mark off the yardage—typically 5, 10, or 15 yards depending on the infraction—moving the ball forward or backward: They picked up fifteen penalty yards on that pass interference call.

The term also appears in fantasy football scoring systems.
