paper towns

Mapmakers' deliberate fabrications

Paper towns are fictitious places that mapmakers insert into their work to detect copying—if the fake town appears on another company's map, the borrowing is exposed.

The term gained wider currency from John Green's 2008 novel, where it extends metaphorically to places that exist in name only, lacking real substance or community.

The town felt like a paper town—all surface, no depth.
