paced out
Walked to measure
Paced out describes measuring a distance by walking it in deliberate, counted steps: He paced out the dimensions of the proposed garden.
Each pace represents a rough unit—typically about three feet—so pacing out gives an approximate measurement when precision isn't critical.
The phrase can also mean distributed or rationed over time: She paced out her remaining energy for the final miles.
