oversalt
Ruin with sodium
To oversalt food is to add too much salt to it, making it unpleasantly salty or even inedible.
The word applies both to cooking and to seasoning at the table: I always oversalt when I'm distracted.
Oversalted dishes are difficult to fix, though adding starch or acid can sometimes help.
The term occasionally appears in figurative contexts about excess or heavy-handedness.
