overinclusion

Casting too wide

Overinclusion is the error of casting too wide a net—including things that don't belong in a category or group.

In law, an overinclusive rule restricts more than necessary: A ban on all dogs in parks is overinclusive if the goal is preventing attacks.

The opposite is underinclusion, which leaves out things that should be covered.
