An overbearing mother is one who exerts excessive control over her children's lives, often continuing well into their adulthood.
She may dictate choices, dismiss boundaries, and insert herself into decisions that aren't hers to make: His overbearing mother still calls him every morning to make sure he's awake.
The term implies both dominance and smothering affection—a parent whose involvement, however well-intentioned, becomes oppressive.
