overarch

Curve above something

To overarch is to form an arch over something, spanning it from above: Ancient oaks overarched the path.

The more common use is figurative—an overarching theme, principle, or goal encompasses or unifies everything beneath it: The overarching message of the campaign was unity.

The participle overarching appears far more often than the base verb.
