outcurve

Away-breaking pitch path

An outcurve is a pitched ball that curves away from the batter—what is now usually called a curveball.

The term dates from early baseball terminology, when pitches were described from the batter's perspective: an outcurve broke outward, while an incurve broke inward.

He threw a wicked outcurve that left the batter swinging at air.
