out-of-sync

Timing is off

Out-of-sync describes things that should be coordinated but aren't—timing that's off, movements that don't match, or systems that have fallen out of alignment.

Audio and video can be out of sync when one lags behind the other.

People feel out of sync when they're not on the same wavelength: We've been out of sync lately—I call when she's busy, she calls when I'm asleep.

The hyphenated form typically precedes a noun; otherwise it's often written *out of sync*.
