optical disc drives

Laser media players

Optical disc drives are computer components that read and write data using laser light on reflective discs—CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays.

The drive spins the disc while a laser reads microscopic pits encoding digital information, or burns new pits to write data.

Once standard in computers, they've become increasingly rare as streaming and flash storage have displaced physical media.

My new laptop doesn't even have an optical disc drive.
