offside position
Beyond last defender
In football (soccer), an offside position occurs when an attacking player is closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender at the moment a teammate plays the ball forward.
Being in an offside position isn't itself an offense—it only becomes one if the player becomes involved in active play.
The rule prevents attackers from simply camping near the goal.
