nuptial contracts
Prenuptial legal documents
Nuptial contracts are legal agreements made before or during marriage that define how assets, debts, and property will be handled—especially in divorce or death.
A prenuptial agreement (prenup) is signed before marriage; a postnuptial agreement comes after.
These contracts typically address financial matters that would otherwise default to state law: Their nuptial contract specified that inherited property would remain separate.
