dowry system
Marriage payment custom
The dowry system is the practice of a bride's family transferring money, property, or goods to the groom or his family at marriage.
Common in South Asian cultures, the system has been criticized for treating women as economic burdens and linked to domestic violence, bride burning, and dowry deaths when families fail to meet demands.
The dowry system persists despite laws against it.
