noir fiction
Gritty crime tales
Noir fiction is crime writing steeped in cynicism, moral ambiguity, and fatalism.
Unlike traditional detective stories where order is restored, noir typically features flawed protagonists—often criminals themselves—trapped by circumstance, desire, or their own poor choices.
The tone is dark and pessimistic; endings are rarely happy: Chandler and Hammett defined American noir fiction.
The term comes from French for "black."
