unreliable narrators
Untrustworthy tale-tellers
Unreliable narrators are storytellers whose account cannot be trusted—whether due to limited knowledge, personal bias, mental instability, or deliberate deception.
The term comes from literary criticism but applies broadly: The memoir reads like an unreliable narrator wrote it.
A narrator may be unreliable without knowing it, or may be lying outright.
The device invites readers to question what they're being told.
