noir detective
Shadowy crime solver
A noir detective is a private investigator or police detective in the tradition of hardboiled crime fiction and film noir—cynical, world-weary, often working the seedy underside of a city.
The type emerged in 1930s–40s American fiction and film: a man in a trench coat, narrating in clipped prose, navigating corruption and femmes fatales.
He fancied himself a noir detective, but he was just a guy with a fedora and trust issues.
