nickel cadmium

Old rechargeable cell

Nickel cadmium describes a type of rechargeable battery using nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes.

These batteries were standard in portable electronics before lithium-ion technology displaced them: My old cordless drill still runs on nickel cadmium.

Often abbreviated NiCad or NiCd.

The cadmium content makes disposal an environmental concern.
