mutterings
Barely audible grumbles
Mutterings are words spoken in a low, indistinct voice, often expressing discontent or disapproval.
The word usually implies complaint or dissent not meant to be fully heard: There were mutterings of discontent among the staff.
Mutterings can also be barely audible speech to oneself: I could hear his mutterings from the next room but couldn't make out the words.
