modern pastimes

Modern pastimes are leisure activities characteristic of contemporary life, often involving technology, screens, or forms of entertainment that emerged in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The phrase typically contrasts with traditional pursuits like reading, gardening, or board games: Scrolling social media has become one of the dominant modern pastimes.

The term can carry faint disapproval, implying that newer diversions are less wholesome than older ones.
