modern haiku
Brief imagist verse
Modern haiku is a short poem inspired by traditional Japanese haiku but adapted for English and other languages.
Unlike classical haiku, which follows strict syllable counts and seasonal references, modern haiku emphasizes brevity, concrete imagery, and a moment of insight or juxtaposition.
The form typically runs three lines but treats the 5-7-5 syllable rule as optional: old pond / a frog jumps in / sound of water.
Most practitioners focus on capturing a single vivid instant rather than counting syllables.
