miscarried
Lost the baby
Miscarried is the past tense of miscarry, which has two main senses.
Most commonly it refers to the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the fetus can survive outside the womb: She miscarried in her second trimester.
The other sense applies to plans or efforts that fail to achieve their intended result: The scheme miscarried when their contact failed to show.
Both uses share the idea of something that was underway but did not reach its expected outcome.
