miniature portrait
Tiny painted face
A miniature portrait is a small, detailed painting of a person, typically rendered in watercolor on ivory, vellum, or copper.
Popular from the 16th through 19th centuries, these pocket-sized likenesses were exchanged between lovers, carried by travelers, or worn as jewelry.
The form required exceptional skill due to its tiny scale: She wore a miniature portrait of her husband in a locket.
