midnight toast
New Year's clink
Midnight toast is a snack made late at night, typically when someone can't sleep or is up working.
The phrase captures the humble, improvised nature of nocturnal eating—toast being simple enough to make half-asleep: I couldn't sleep, so I had some midnight toast and read for a while.
