metronymic
Named for mother
A metronymic is a name derived from a mother or maternal ancestor, the counterpart to patronymic.
Where Johnson means "son of John," a metronymic like Margueriteson would mean "son of Marguerite." Metronymics are rare in most naming traditions but appear in some matrilineal cultures and occasionally when a father was unknown or the mother was prominent.
