medical deferment
Illness delays service
A medical deferment is a postponement of an obligation—typically military service—due to a health condition.
During the Vietnam War era, medical deferments became notorious as ways for privileged young men to avoid the draft: He got a medical deferment for bone spurs.
The term applies more broadly to any official delay granted for health reasons.
