marking period

Academic assessment segment

A marking period is a division of the academic year during which student grades are calculated and reported.

Most American schools use four marking periods (quarters) or two (semesters), with report cards issued at the end of each: My grades improved in the second marking period.

The term is primarily used in K-12 education.
