major championships

Sport's biggest titles

In golf, the major championships are the four most prestigious annual tournaments: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S.

Open, and the Open Championship (British Open).

A golfer's career is often measured by major wins: He has three majors but hasn't won one in five years.

In tennis, the majors are the four Grand Slam events.

Other sports use the term similarly for their most significant competitions.
