mailbox theft
Stealing delivered letters
Mailbox theft is the crime of stealing mail from someone's mailbox, typically to intercept checks, credit cards, or personal information for fraud.
The term also covers stealing the mailbox itself.
In the U.S., it's a federal offense since mail is protected by postal law: They installed a locking mailbox after a string of mailbox thefts in the neighborhood.
