lost towns
Communities now gone
Lost towns are settlements that once existed but have been abandoned, destroyed, or submerged—now existing only in records, ruins, or memory.
Some were deserted after economic collapse or natural disaster; others lie underwater behind dams or beneath reservoirs.
The phrase sometimes extends to neighborhoods or districts erased by urban renewal: The highway project created a dozen lost towns in its path.
