level down

Lower the standard

Level down is to reduce something to a lower standard or capability, often to match the weakest element in a group.

In gaming, it means decreasing a character's level or stats: The patch leveled down all max-level players.

More broadly, it describes equalizing by lowering rather than raising: Critics say the policy levels down education to the slowest students.

The opposite of level up.
